Growing up, one of the first things one learned about India was that it’s a country that has a vast diversity of culture and heritage. One was enthralled by the idea of so many states, each having their own different language (and in some cases more than one language!), culture, traditions, cuisine, dance-forms, music, festivals etc. India then appeared like a kaleidoscope, a shimmering fusion of colour and gaiety.
Ah! The naivety of childhood
What a severe blow it is to that puerile romanticism, when later on one learns about the rough and sharp edges of this kaleidoscope, the hardships of everyday life faced by a significant population of this vast nation.
This cultural melting pot of a country has been witnessing considerable movement of people amongst its various parts. Sometimes seeking better opportunities for education while sometimes in search of better livelihood, reasons are a plenty that uproot people from their home. Many then flock to the urban centres in search of a new beginning.
For a large number of them though, what awaits is a life in slums. Lacking education and vocational skills, their options are often limited to manual labour or working as waste-pickers for the sake of a meagre livelihood.
Despite the grind of poverty they get caught up in, somewhere in a cherished corner of their hearts, survives the memory of their homeland, their culture, and their traditions. So, when we at Gulmeher, embarked upon the task of designing a calendar for the coming year, we decided that it should give expression to this memory, to the diverse backgrounds and cultures of the women who work at Glmeher.
Each page of Gulmeher’s 2018 ‘Amazing India’ calendar thus, carries landmarks and cultural mementos from various states of our country. Each page, tells a story, a story of painstaking detail that goes into creating art with discarded flowers. While each page shows where these women come from, the story that remains untold is of
their journey and their struggles, and ultimately how they rose above their circumstances, transforming themselves into trained artisans, skilful enough to showcase the specialties of the different regions they come from through creative means.
Discover new states every month! Check out the Gulmeher Amazing India calendar 2018.
