Programmes: Livelihood Programs
Creating New Futures for Waste Picker Women in Ghazipur
The average monthly earning of a waste picker is found out to be Rs 4000-6000. However, their livelihood comes at the cost of their health and safety. To improve the livelihoods and quality of life of 350 such waste-picker households, Gulmeher initiated its livelihood programs. The objective was to develop an alternative source of livelihood for the waste pickers which was safer, healthier and dignified.
Phool Patti Unit
We began by training erstwhile women waste-pickers to make products from discarded flowers and recycled paper. As more women joined and their sill development enhanced, our Phool Patti Unit was set up in May 2013 to train more women in our flagship floral artwork. These women were skilled to handcraft stationery products, home decor and gifting items.
Rang Birangi Unit
Over time, women from neighbouring low income communities of Khichidipur and Kalyanpuri also joined the center and by 2015, the number of women workers increased to 40. It also gave us the opportunity to expand our product offering and cater to seasonal demands keeping our eco-friendly agenda at heart. Our Rang Birangi unit was launched soon. This unit specialises in making all natural dry colours from flowers and vegetables. These colours are safe, fragrant, eco-friendly and 100 per cent chemical-free. Be it Holi, Durga Puja or rangoli colours for Diwali, our Rang Birangi unit carries out focused production during specific months to be ready in time to make your festivals a little more colourful.
Sui Dhaga Unit
Expanding our product portfolio further and keeping up with the growing aspirations of Gulmeher women, we started our Sui Dhaga unit that trained and up-skilled 20 women in the craft of embroidery and stitching techniques. The women in our Sui Dhaga unit have honed their skills and this makes them ready for orders from buyers like Fabindia, Pitara, Pero and Rangsutra as well as Gulmeher’s own brand which focuses on products ranging from home furnishings, shopping bags, crochet etc.
